Case Study Range Hoods

Let’s look at how we can successfully apply Silentium ANC into a home appliance.

If you were asked to create a list of some of the noisiest appliances at home, undoubtedly sooner or later range hoods would appear on that list. Range hoods are known for the high decibel levels of noise they create – that’s why most people use them for as little time as possible. The EU have even started to implement targets in order to lower the amount of noise emitted from electrical equipment – which is why it’s more important than ever before to “Think Quiet’ when manufacturing products for the home.

The Range Hood

The noise that comes from a range hood is usually created from a blower which pushes air through the system. This then disperses the smell or smoke from your cooking. A range hood is comprised of three main sources of noise creation.

  • Air inlet
  • Air outlet
  • Body

Of course all of these sources create different levels and types of noise, but an ideal ANC product would work to combat all three of these sources of sound. What’s true, is that blocking the flow of air would certainly quieten this product, but without air moving through it would almost definitely not do its job effectively.

The World’s Quietest Range Hood

Faber, the Italian company that invented range hoods were dealing with exactly this quandary when they approached Silentium. How to make a quiet range hood? Cutting to the end of the story, with the help of Silentium, Faber are now the manufacturers of the “World’s quietest Range Hood”!

So How Did we Do it?

The ANC components are made up of: a speaker, a microphone and the Silentium S-Cube™. These are placed inside the chimney hood and they reduce the noise from the inlet.

The microphone detects the noise and then the ANC system emits a signal which is then sent to the speaker which creates an anti-noise that cancels out the originally detected noise.

The ANC can be in the form of an additional chip (Silentium S-Cube™) placed into the existing circuit board of the product and the microphone can also be removed once the sound is monitored, calibrated and sent to the ANC chip to create the anti-noise. This saves space and weight within the product.

Customers are often prepared to pay a little more for superior products, especially those that have had the noise cancelled out!
